EcoCARE Pacific Trust - IntroductionIn August 2004, a group of friends went on a sailing holiday to Tonga. During this time a number of issues were identified that affected all members of the party. It seemed appropriate when considering the diverse nature of each member’s expertise and our desire to participate that this group of friends should accept this opportunity. In 2005 EcoCARE Pacific Trust was formed and is made up of Canterbury University alumni and current staff. EcoCARE Pacific Trust is created to acquire financial and material resources, develop expertise, facilitate and initiate projects and programmes that are of benefit to the people of Tonga and other Pacific Island nations. The Trust invites corporations, institutes, organisations and individuals to donate time, funds and/or resources for educational, environmental, health and humanitarian projects in Pacific Island nations. We invite people who are prepared to see the problems of developing countries as challenges or opportunities for finding solutions in a collaborative manner. It is worth mentioning here that some of the most innovative ideas for new products and services have come from efforts to address the needs of those most in need. We believe that the development of local capacity through local community development, undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral programs, and the appropriate and sustainable utilization of resources are key components to the ongoing development of these nations. As a result EcoCARE has developed relationships with the government and people of Tonga and organisations and individuals that are able to participate in a constructive way in this development. Our motif is the Frigate Bird because they are excellent fliers, both in terms of the distance they can cover across the vast oceans and their extremely skilled maneuverability in flight. They have a wing span of 230 cm and are found throughout tropical areas of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
